Cook, John

John Cook was born in Halifax, 1918. He began painting overseas during the Second World War while serving with the Canadian Army Signal Corps. Later he studied at the Slade School, England, and the Nova Scotia College of Art and at the Acadaemie des Beaux-Arts, Antwerp, Belgium. Mr. Cook painted in the realistic style. He was a prolific painter, a landscape painter; he later painted the old part of Halifax which was quickly being modernized. Many of his paintings were done on the spot, one step ahead of the demolition crews. He exhibited with the Nova Scotia Society of Artists, the Maritime Art Association and the Winnipeg Art Association. The Department of Northern Affairs and the Nova Scotia Museum bought his work. Many of the fine artists of Nova Scotia painted with him and he was an ardent teacher. He died in 1984.
